Dr. Kellon believes that a comprehensive revitalization of the older horse is now possible using a holistic approach to wellness.  Recent developments in nutritional supplementation, in scientific conditioning, and in new therapies for chronic ailments have shown a remarkable ability to roll back the clock for these animals.

Many of these therapies fall into the realm of natural medicine.  But Dr. Kellon does not throw out traditional medicine and surgery where appropriate for specific ailments or conditions.  She explains when to choose a natural approach and when to revert to traditional medicine.

This book will have particular interest to horse owners who compete with their horses.  Here are nutritional formulas, new conditioning techniques, and many therapy treatments that have been developed especially to give the older horses new life in the arena, the trail or the racetrack.  Animals over 10, even those in their advanced teens, can compete effectively against much younger horses using this information.

Health problems of the older horse are also addressed.  These include arthritis, digestive problems, eye problems, circulator problems including cardiac conditions, parasites that attack older horses, and so on.  Natural and traditional treatments are suggested for all diseases and conditions.

Aging may be inevitable.  But there is plenty of room for improving both the length and quality of our horses’ lives.  This book shows you how.

Dr. Eleanor Kellon, VMD has a general horse practice in southeastern Pennsylvania where she lives on a horse farm with her husband Andy, their children and many horses.

In conjunction with her husband, Dr. Kellon also operates a Standardbred Racing Stable.  Many of her techniques for prolonging the useful life of horses have resulted from her racing work.

Dr. Kellon is the author of many books and magazine articles on equestrian health.  She is an honors graduate of the University of Pennsylvania.  She received special training at the University of Pennsylvania New Bolton Center in Large Animal Medicine and Surgery.
